The Search For Real Good News

“We do, however, speak a message of wisdom among the mature, but not the wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing.”- 1 Corinthians 2:6

It seems today, so many people are influenced by media. We listen to stories, read headlines (because who has time to read over 1,000 words), or look at someone’s status update and take them as fact. We fall for anything and allow ourselves to be swayed by our inability to search for the facts.

The sad thing is we tend to lean towards outlets that fall in line with our own bias. We fail to seek out different ideas than ours and if we do, we still look at them through skeptical spectacles and have our thoughts already shaped from the beginning.

Another unfortunate piece to the media mess, and I believe it to be the most unfortunate, is the fact that it creates disunity amongst the very people who need to be unified. Sometimes, it feels like Satan controls the airwaves and God’s people get sucked into the lopsided reporting, false accusations, and rough reporting with limited facts.

Then, instead of praying for wisdom and discernment in what we hear, we jump to our own biased conclusions and the separation begins. The very thing that the enemy wants to do is create dissension in the lives of God’s creation. He wins when God’s people are joining in the process.

When God’s people respond in hate and fail to give compassionate responses to hard situations, we miss the mark of who we are supposed to be in this world. We are to be salt and light in this world in order to serve all people and when we let biases overtake us, then we limit our scope of service.

Christ served without partiality and loved unconditionally. He called His followers to do the same.  We are to walk in wisdom and grace, which can only be obtained by the Spirit of God, not a news outlet.

We need to choose our steps wisely. We need to be aware of our words and the damage they can cause if they are not filled with love and peace.

May our lives be influenced by impartial grace. May we be directed by the Spirit of God and not by the media that fits our views.

A Christian heart should be filled with compassion. When this is absent; so is Christ. May our hearts be transformed to lift up the broken.

Let God’s people reveal the light of the good news in Christ; in the midst of dark news in the world.
