Why Being Connected With God Is Based Solely On You

“The Lord will make you the head, not the tail. If you pay attention to the commands of the Lord your God that I give you this day and carefully follow them, you will always be at the top, never at the bottom. Do not turn aside from any of the commands I give you today, to the right or to the left, following other gods and serving them.”-Deuteronomy 28:13-15

The trend today is all about options. It doesn’t matter where you go, you have options. You go to the grocery store, you have an option for which brand cereal you want, which type of soda you would like, even what lane you want to check out in.

We have walls of confusion at every fast food restaurant that gives you a panic attack if you hear “Can I help who’s next?” before you’re really ready to order.

The list can go on and on.

The issue is, we have allowed options to overtake our faith. Yes, you have an option as to which church you want to be a part of in your community. Yes, you have an option for which ministry you would like to get involved in. Yes, you have an option as to how often you serve.

However, according to scripture, you do not have an option of whether or not you will partake in these options.

If you claim Christ as your Savior, which 98% of my readers do (a statistic purely made up for this post due to the fact that I’m guessing 2% accidentally click on the link when someone shares it), then your options are now whether you really want to be a participant in God’s story or you just like it.

What do I mean?

A participant in God’s story will strive to find ways to serve the church. They will make time for their body. They will prioritize their faith activity over their extra-curricular activities. They will place their time with God, the Church, and their spiritual growth over all other things.

Why?

Because they realize that their connection with God is the one thing that will last eternally, all other things fade.

People who merely “like” the story, make their relationship with God, their Church, and their spiritual growth an option. They look at it as a calendar item. Do I have time? Does it fit in my schedule? If not, well, I’ll make it when I get a chance. I love Jesus, but my connection with Him will have to wait until I finish (fill in the blank).

That is such a flawed way of seeing our relationship with Jesus. Yes, He knows we have things that we need to do, but He should always be our first priority. There should never be a place for us to say, “You know, I just don’t have time for church, for praying, for serving, for sharing the gospel, for being connected.”

Now, before anyone says, “Well, you know, sometimes, I can’t be a part of a Sunday due to family things, planned trips, vacations, so don’t try to make me feel bad for choosing things that are important too.” I’m not saying that. Besides, if you only see your possible involvement with Church on a Sunday, that’s a whole other issue that needs to be fixed.

We need our family time. We need to honor our work responsibilities. We need to be a part of social gatherings.

However, we need to be sure that they aren’t our first priority when it comes to our options.

God is to be first and foremost in our lives. That is not an option.

Your only option is: Do you want to be fully connected or do you just like hanging out every once in a while?

That is up to you.
