“Therefore, as we have
opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to
the family of believers.”-Galatians 6:10 (NIV)
In a time of heart break and suffering the world needs
Christians to rise up. They don’t need Christians pointing out the evil in the
world, they already see it and know it is there. They don’t need Christians
telling people that the world is broken; they can see it falling down around
them.
The world needs Christians to point to hope and demonstrate
the hope they know in Jesus.
Yes, we need to share about the
sinful nature of mankind. Yes, we need to be honest about the present suffering
that is occurring. However, we need to be more focused on being examples of
good in the world.
It is interesting when Paul writes
in Galatians about “doing good to all people”, he prefaced it with the idea of “sowing
to please the Spirit and reaping eternal life”, then saying “Let us not become
weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not
give up.” (Galatians 6:8-9; NIV)
When we sow good things in this
world, we will reap eternal life through the Spirit. We will receive
eternity from the Spirit.
In a world that is bleak, dreary,
and suffering from hate and division, Christians need to sow goodness.
People need to see us doing good
works. They need to see believers rising to the occasion and taking the
opportunity to share good news and hope to a broken world.
In a world that struggles with
putting differences aside and have healthy conversation in pursuit of change,
Christians need to reveal a new way of interaction.
We (especially those who follow Christ) have the opportunity to do good
to and for all, by showing how to discuss issues
without division, love each other in our differences, serve those who are not
followers of Jesus, caring for the uncared for, and speaking peace in conflict.
We have a major opportunity in
front of us to be the light in this dark world. Yet, for so many believers, we decide to take sides as well. We speak hateful words to people who think
differently. We are unable to have peaceful conversations. We are a part of the
division.
We aren’t doing good, but causing
damage.
We can hold our beliefs on issues,
but they should never come before the call of Christ to love our neighbor. We
can be have our convictions, but they should never take precedence over bringing
peace and reconciliation to the world.
May we take advantage of the
opportunity now to do good. May we show the world that Christ followers are
good. May they see that we are willing to do good for everyone, not just for
ourselves. May we be willing to love everyone without expectations of love in
return.
This is when we are sowing what is
good and pleasing the Spirit.
Peace and blessings friends.
QUESTION: How can you sow goodness today?
