More than Products of Divorce

“For God knows that in the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she took from its fruit and ate; and she gave also to her husband with her, and he ate.”- Genesis 3: 5-6

As a child of divorce I know the pain that comes from the process. I have seen the pain it brings to my parents, the family, and friends involved. It is hard. There is nothing good, while it is taking place, that comes from divorce and I wish it was a harder procedure to accomplish.

The reality is we are all a product of divorce. In the beginning we hear and possibly visualize the event in the Garden of Eden. We know how Adam and Eve chose to go against the words of God and eat fruit from the tree to be like Him. They lost the connection with their Creator due to their inability to think logically and reasonably about what the serpent was doing with his mind games.

Due to this connection being lost, mankind was set on a painful path of being products of divorce. The Israelites were sent into slavery. They were in the desert for 40 years. They were constantly under attack, while waiting for the Messiah to come. Prior to Jesus coming on earth they had lost their strength and were overpowered by the Roman government. The people were lost.

When Jesus came God was giving the glimpse of hope needed for His people. The creation needed to know their Creator had not left them forever. He was coming back for them and He was going to walk with them again. The divorce was not final! The divorce occurred, not because He wanted it, but because man chose to walk away. He wanted His people to know that He was redeeming the relationship through His Son.

The redemption came through His Son’s sacrifice to heal the pain of the separation. The original procedure of divorce in the Garden was easy; all it took was a bite. However, God wanted to show the process of reconciliation was just as easy, we just needed to trust and accept the sacrifice.

We are products of divorce due to the pain and struggle we have to go through in life. It was messy. It was and is a hard event that took place. We have to acknowledge the hurt that was felt across all of humanity as the creation, but we would be remiss to ignore the pain that the Creator had to have felt as well.

However, in the end, the Creator wants us to know, the divorce was not finalized! He has redeemed His creation through the blood of His Son! He has ultimately healed the wounds gained through the procedure. Unfortunately, while we are here, we will inherit scars. The great thing is our God has redefined, refurbished, reconnected, and reconciled the product of divorce; we are now a product of hope and new life...and that is the final product!
