The Weight of Promises

“I establish my covenant with you: Never again will all life be cut off by the waters of a flood; never again will there be a flood to destroy the earth...This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come: I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth.”- Genesis 9: 11-13

Imagine if God didn’t keep His promises. What would our life be like? Perhaps we wouldn’t even have a life because of our failure to keep our promises with Him? The covenants He made with His creation were an agreement between both He and His creation. It was not a one way connection, but for some reason man took it as that.

The great thing about God is He won’t break His promises! He has kept them from the very beginning and will not go back on His word. If He did, that would ruin His brand. God has set up His platform to be a promise keeper. He has established His character as the God of His Word. He will not make a promise and break it.

I wish the creation would take a lesson from their creator. I wish we would be able to keep the promises we make with each other. There would be less divorce; less children being left alone, less people ignoring responsibilities, and much more.

Our promises mean something. The promises we break or keep teach life lessons to each and every person counting on us to come through. It can teach them to trust us and other people or it can create an apprehension that hinders them from having healthy relationships moving forward.

Absent fathers can create a disconnection for their children and their Heavenly Father due to the broken promise of that natural connection here on earth. On the flip side, a father who is active in the life of their child, loving and protecting, can assist in connecting their child with their Creator by showing what it will be like in heaven and then some.

Promises carry a lot with them. We need to make sure, if we make them, we make them with full intention of following through. Our Creator takes promises seriously and He expects His creation to do the same. If He didn’t, then we wouldn’t be here and we wouldn’t have any hope for the future.
